Artistic inspiration and techniques

Most of Hannah’s inspiration comes from nature. She elaborates: “Flowers are my favorite! More ornamental than realistic, though. Mushrooms, leaves, little animals, bigger animals—anything you’d find in the forest! I like to feel deeply connected to nature.” Hannah prefers to use black and gray, and a few highlights for now, although she believes she will experiment with her style forever—“I’m keeping it simple for now . . . Big lines and fine dots always look great together; the contrast pops.”

Working mostly freehand, Hannah draws natural forms directly on the skin. This allows her to create something “straight from the heart.” Although she concedes modern technology is incredible and that many tattoo artists now use iPads, she deliberately chose not to use tech, so she could work in a simpler and more natural way. Explaining her working process, she comments, “I never have a plan when I meet my customer, really. All I need is an area and an idea of budget (so I don’t get carried away), plus an idea of what my client is into visually. Next comes the magic!”
